PABT Written test or Instrumentation and Battery test

Written test or Instrumentation and Battery test

This test for PABT is basically done to examine how well you can read the basic instruments in an air plane. You may think now that I don't know anything about the instruments. Do not worry, all the instruments will be shown and will be properly explained there. You need to listen to what the officer says and be alert at that time. Ask him doubts if you find any trouble reading the instruments. We again stress the importance of asking doubts at the proper time. Do not hold back your doubts. Ask it and clear it
If you can listen to the officer properly you will be able to pass the exam.

But as we do not want to take chances it would be good to know about the test better as our motto always is

Understand the test better and prepare accordingly you will pass it.

So here we are go to explain the test for a small advantage that you will have above your competitors.

After the explanation by the officer during the test you will be asked to write an exam. The exam will be conducted in 20 minutes and you will have to answer around 60 questions. The number of questions is huge as they are providing maximum provision for improvement, previously there used to be only 30 questions for 20 minutes. If you can answer just 20 questions in 20 minutes you would have a chance of getting in  if your answers are right.

Also do not go for answers which you are not sure of. Answer always the questions you are sure and you will have  a better chance to get yourself selected.

Now what will be the questions about ?

As we have said the questions will be about the instruments and their readings normally. So if you have some understanding about functioning of the instruments it is better you can by pass your competitors by leaps. So here we will provide the basic information for you to get selected.

There are 6 type of instrument about which you should have some basic knowledge about.

The 6 instruments are
  1. Magnetic Compass
  2. Artificial Horizon
  3. AltiMeter
  4. Turn and Back Indicator
  5. Climb and Descent Indicator
  6. Air Speed Indicator

PABT Phase 2 Control Velocity Test

Phase 2 or Drum Test or Control Velocity Test

This is a more simpler video game. You would have played many basic video games where you are a tank and you need to shoot at air planes coming above on the screen. In fact control velocity test is just the same one intended to measure your speed reactions to various situations.

Speed matters here nothing else.

You will have a knob which controls the red  ball. When the game starts  a series of  yellow balls will come from all sides of the screen. What you need to do is basically superimpose the red ball on the yellow balls. Each capture will give you 1 point.

You need to score maximum points in the give time period. The maximum you score here the maximum chance you have of passing thegrade required for PABT.

You will get enough practice chance before you need to attempt the game. Hence you need not go to any training institute where similar equipments have been installed. In fact being cool and enjoying the game will get you some good scores in this test.

Psychological Tests on Day 2

Psychological Tests

Day 2 of SSB interview will be  the Psychological test day. On this day a series of tests will be conducted by the interviewers or psychologist to understand the true character that is with in you. Normally after this Day 2 , the psychologist will have a clear idea of how well you are in almost all the areas or qualities.

So it is important that you need to prepare yourself so that you project the best personality with in you. So as a part of preparation it is important that you know about the type of tests conducted on Day 2 of SSB interview process first.

So we will go with the type of tests first.
Normally there are 4 type of tests conducted on day 2 of SSB interview process.

The tests are
  1. Thematic Appreciation Test
  2. Word Association Test
  3. Situation Reaction Test
  4. Self Description

So let us look at each of this tests one by one in detail. Also note that along with understanding the type of tests it is important that you need to  prepare  your mind for the respective test. We will be posting effective practice papers for you so that you will be able to prepare yourself better for the process.

Word Association Test

Word Association Test

Word Association Test is the second test that will be conducted on Day 2 of your SSB interview schedule. After the Thematic appreciation test , you will be given a break of around 10 minutes and you will have to attend the Word Association Test soon.

Word association test will have a series of words shown on the projector and you will be asked to respond to the word show in a sentence.
eg. if the word shown on the screen is  army
you can respond to it with
Indian army is the most prestigious army in the world.

This is just an example. You can add any sentence that comes to your mind.
In fact a series of around 60 words will be shown on the projector and you will be given a time gap of 15seconds to respond. So it is important that you need to think fast properly and write your response legibly, so if you practice this thing a bit you can develop well in this test.

So here are some practice words for your self practice.

Tips on writing the proper sentences

  • Always write a positive response.Never give impression to your interviewer that you are a man with  a negative outlook.
  • Always write the response fast and neat.
  • Avoid using sentences that are common ( like common sentences that are known to everyone ). You need to create a sentence yourself . The response you have given should be like you are the only person who can  write that particular response. Remember that the interviewer will have conducted thousands of such interviews before and that he will have read thousands of replies to that particular word. So your sentence have to be something particular that the interviewer gets attracted to your sentence.

Word association test is one test where practice can make you perfect. So prepare yourself well with all the possible options for this test and keep on preparing. So aim to achieve maximum marks in this test.

Situation Reaction Test

Situation Reaction Test

Situation Reaction Test   is conducted after a short break from the Word Association Test.
This test is similar to the Picture perception test in a bigger way with the point that no picture will be shown to you.

You will be given a question booklet where there will be a total of 60 questions. The total time for the test will be 30 minutes. So by doing the math you can understand that
60 questions -   30 minutes
2 questions – 1 minute.

So you should be able to complete each question in 30 seconds time.Try to do all 60 and remember that even if you are not able to do all 60 it would not affect your marks much. So be cool and try(only try ) to do all 60 questions. That will ensure that you will be able to do the maximum questions and top the grades of SSB.

What is the test about ?
The test will be about real life situations which you will have to face in real life. You are expected to write a response to the situation ( of how you will react to the situation if a similar occurrence comes up in your life. )

Be careful to note that all the response you write should end with you solving the problem and always be positive.

Another point to note here is the fact that always respond in sequence. Complete the questions one by one and then move on to the next. This will give an impression to the interviewer that you are consistent that  you will respond to any situation with equal importance.

Write your response legibly . Just 2-3 lines will do the job.

See the practice problems we have provided for you.

SSB Interview Self Description

Self Description

This is another area where you can prepare a well written answer the day before the exam. Even if you have not prepared an answer for you be clear of what to write when you are given the time to write.

The test time  will be 15 minutes  and it would give a good impression to your interviewer if you can write the self description in paragraphs in a proper model in a neat and legible way.

Proper model
A well prepared Self Description will have the following subheadings
  1. What you think about yourself
  2. What your friends think about you
  3. What your parents think about you
  4. What your teachers think about you
Prepare well the first part yourself. Add more points in the first part and be precise in the other 3 parts.

So while writing the last 3 parts it would be good if you can ask your friends , teachers and parents about what they think about you. This can sound silly to many. But understand that they can provide correct insight about you which will be helpful in developing your character better,.

Suppose if your parents say that you are lazy. Write it in the elf description and also add the point that you have been trying hard to overcome that weakness you have. Also point out the steps you have done to overcome that particulate weakness with examples.

So it is important that you need to spend some time and write a wonderful self description about you. It would be better if you are true to yourself and not add unnecessary qualities just for the sake of impressing your interviewers. Write almost all the negatives about you and the steps you have been doing to reduce those negatives. This would be one area where you will be able to impress your interviewer. So be well prepared with your self description. In fact I would suggest you to write  a self description about you now. You can edit it based upon other factors later.

See some of the model self descriptions we have provided to you.

SSB Interview Thematic Appreciation Test

Thematic Appreciation Test

Thematic appreciation test is the first psychological test you will have to face on Day 2 of your SSB interview schedule. This test will be conducted on the early morning hours of 6 :oo am. So your mind will be fresh after a good and delicious breakfast.

The test is similar to the picture perception and description test which was held on Day 1 .In this test you will be shown a series of pictures (all hazy and unclear ) to the candidates for a time period of 30 seconds.
A total of 11 unclear pictures will be shown and then a12th picture ( a blank picture ) will be shown to you.You will have to write  a value based story in a time period of 3-5 minutes. The process of the test varies from boards to boards and you will be explained properly the instructions before the test by the officer.
So be careful and be attentive. Listen to the interview process he says and take notes in your mind.

We have explained to you the general interview process.

While writing the story follow all the tips we have provided to you in the picture perception and description test.

General Tips
  • Create a story that showcases your officer like qualities.
  • Since you are writing more than one story, take note of the fact that your stories have to be consistent. Suppose if one of your story proves that you are a hardworking man, you should never give the impression that you are lazy in another story of yours. So your stories has to be consistent.
  • The best way by which you can do that is by being yourself. So try to develop your character by imbibing the best officer like qualities into your character itself.

It is better to do that than try to cheat the interviewer or psychologist with some well prepared stores that will showcase some different characters from your character. Sooner or later the interviewer will soon get to your real qualities as the interview process in the SSB is too long and extensive.

My SSB Interview Experience 2012 Bangalore Centre

My First Ever SSB Interview Experience

My SSB interview was at the Bangalore services selection board centre. Everyone was asked by the call letter to report at the Bangalore city railway station at 14:30 hrs . I had reached the city very long before and had some time to go for a trip round the city . In fact it was my first visit to Bangalore and I really enjoyed it.

We were given a free ride to the SSB centre in Bangalore from the railway station by military vehicle. There I came to see a lot of  guys with similar aims and similar goals which indeed made the journey to this interview worth while.

We reached the SSB centre after a 20 minute ride and was asked to sit in a big hall.Everyone started chatting with each other.and it was then they gave us  a series of forms to fill up.The forms give to us included
  1. Personal information questionnaire
  2. Travelling allowance form
  3. Identification form
  4. Score card

We were asked to fill up all the details  ( basic details like address , name and other details ) in these forms. Chest number s were given to us then.In some forms like identification form we had to paste a photo of ours and  also go through the process having our left hand finger print stamped in it.

We also had to paste the railway ticket by which we came on the back side of the travelling allowance form to get the necessary refunds for the journey.

After all the forms were filed up , what happened next was the verification of documents. 10th certificate , 12th certificate, provisional certificate, and semester wise mark sheets were verified by the officers . Remember that the originals have to be shown to them. There were cases where may guys were sent back when they had been unable to provide them the originals.

After the certificate verification we were asked to wear the chest numbers and we were given further instructions on the code of conduct to be followed inside the SSB interview centre.

Then we were accompanied to our rooms ( stage 1 accommodation) since the time was already around the 20 :00 hrs. We went to the mess and had a delicious dinner. We then went back to our rooms and had  a good sleep.

Screening day

The test were scheduled to begin at 6 :00 hrs. So we were instructed to be at the centre provided at 5 : 50 hrs. Since we had to finish the breakfast before that we were supposed to get up around 4 : 00 hrs.May be because of the tension of the interview , many candidates were having sleep less nights and many seemed to be awake even at 2: 00 hrs in the morning.

The breakfast was bread , butter, jam. Omelet and oats. The food was good and everyone was pumped up over the exams as this was the first time for many. I also got the chance to talk to an experienced campaigner of SSB interviews  who was now attending the interview along with me for the 9 the time.

Intelligence Tests

Soon we were accompanied to the examination hall and were explained to about the the test process. Every test in the SSB interview will be explained properly by the officers when you are supposed to ask any doubts that you have. In fact in some of the tests like intelligence tests you are given a set of practice paper where you are given time to write  a practice paper and get used to the system of exam.

The explanation for the exams were adequate and was in fact self explanatory. Even if you go there with out much preparation on your part and then listen to the instructions provided by the officers before the test  it would be sufficient to write the exam well.

But from my experience I would say that knowing about the test process before hand will surely give you a wonderful lead above other candidates.

The intelligence tests are old and in fact the teats follow the same model designed by experts back in 1974. The questions do not seems to have been updated and hence new and new concepts of reasoning and interpretation do not feature in the tests. Hence with some orientation and preparation we can achieve good results in these tests.

Picture Perception and Deception Test

The same goes through for the Picture Perception and Deception Test (P.P.D.T) which in fact was explained properly. I had to write  a story in 3 minutes. In fact I was prepared about this test and I had no problem in completing the story in 3 minutes. But what I did not notice was that after my engineering degree I had not written a single piece of paragraph of paper. I should have practised a bit of writing before hand. The writing in such a situation seemed to stressful for me and the handwriting was illegible.further the cold temperature outside made the writing process hard.

But I felt good that I was able to complete the story in a proper way required taking into consideration all the factors necessary to frame a story. What followed then was the narration and discussion.

Group Discussion

We were divided into group and my group was a group of 18. we all were asked to narrate our story one by one which seemed to eat up around 18 minutes of the total time the total time was 20 minutes which left us with just around 2 minutes of discussion time. In fact the seriousness of the discussion came to the fore in front of everyone and what happened was a meaningless discussion where everyone was hurrying to speak whatever that came to their minds. You could see at least 3-4 speakers speaking at a time and in my opinion it was the worst discussion I had ever attended.  Mainly because of the fact that nothing sensible was discussed and nothing could be heard. After around the 2 minutes time period, the interviewer called off the discussion and asked to leave the hall.

We went straight to the mess and had the lunch. After the lunch we were asked to assemble in the hall for the results. It was then we were paid by the officers our travelling allowance and in fact it was happy time for many as many seemed to have hit a fortune there. It is true that the centre refunds you money based on the reserved ticket you have pasted behind the travelling allowance form on the first day.

Suppose if you had travelled fro Cochin to Bangalore in AC 3 tier, the ticket charge was around Rs. 700/- So the person would have got 1400/- now from the officers. You need to take into account the fact that due to the wavering travel date back to home none of these guys would have booked their tickets back home which would mean that they will have to travel back general. This would mean a huge advantage in monetary value to them as they will be paid the AC travel expense by the government.

Results
The results came a s a shocker  to many as the number of students who were allowed to go to the second stage of selection process was just 21.Considering the number of candidates who have come to the the interview, number of candidates who got recommended to the second stage interview process was too low.Remember that after the second stage interview process, there is the stage of medical examination and then the overall grade point national wise consideration process.

The candidates who lost the stage 1 interview process of SSB were accompanied back to the railway station by the  military vehicle.
